Default Pre-1978 Fuel Sender Unit

Specifically, 1976.

Hi all (long time lurker, first time poster here):

I'm looking for help in getting a part number, and ideally a pointer to a parts source, for a fuel sender for my 1976 245. The problems I have with mine is that the gauge only works from full to half (it's not terribly accurate as far as I can tell for even the first half of the tank) and the wiring to the in-tank pump is loose and flakey where it goes in through the top of the sender. The pump itself seems to work fine.

I would ideally like to replace the whole unit with a new or known functioning part. Worst case scenario, I could rebuild/rewire mine, but I'd rather not do that if I can get a new part.

I have attached (I hope) several pictures which show the top of my sender as well as the hole in the tank where the sender goes in. Both are annotated with the diameter of the sender/hole. As you can see, this is a sender - which I've been told is characteristic of a part for pre-1978 cars - where the locking ring is actually a single unit with the top of the sender (it's not a separate ring as it is on newer versions).

My car is relatively new to me but came from the desert southwest, so it's incredibly rust and crud free. The fuel tank is in excellent shape, so I'd really (really!) like to avoid having to change the tank in order to use a newer sender.

Any help (opinions, etc.) that anyone here can provide will be most appreciated!

The part number for the early sender with pre-pump is 1235227. It's still available from Volvo.

I've got a NOS sender sans float and pre-pump I'll let go for $150.

^^ At least you can still get one. So many 240 parts are NLA now.

Yeah, he beat me by 3 whole minutes.

I was going to include a new float, a new seal and a new piece of submersible fuel hose for a little more $$.

Thanks folks for the quick replies. The unit in hiperfauto's picture looks just like mine...if mine were new. But what's interesting (to me at least) is that if you go to Volvo's part site and look up that part number (1235227), you get a parts drawing of a newer-style unit...one with a separate locking ring. The one from my car (and in hiperfauto's picture) is shown in the diagrams, but there's no part number. I assume, because it's NLA from Volvo.

Tracking down parts for these cars is indeed a challenge. Good thing you guys are here.
