Title pretty much says it all. I'd like to consider an engine swap for a turbo some time and I want to know what's in a 760 or 960 before I go looking around.

Hold on. I have an '88 760 wagon with a redblock B230FT. It is just the six cylinder to avoid.

The current owner said that it is a 5 cylinder, but I don't think he knows what he's talking about. Unless I'm completely clueless I don't think 5 cylinders came in any of the RWD models.

Any idea what hp it has. I think they come with about 160.

LOL. I have another thread in the performance section going about dynoing it. The good news is that mathematically a great TB'er threw 50 to 80 time, weight, gear ratios and some chicken bones into account and came up with 120 at the rear wheel. For a 6000 ft elevation and 200K miles that is fine when you figure for 25% drivetrain losses.

Got a stupid oil leak to fix before taking it over to see the match against the output from the dyno.

The plus side against the miles is fresh tune and a 2.5" flowmaster exhaust.

The book 160 seems like a conservative number in my experience.

760 Turbo = same B230FT as a 740 Turbo
760 no turbo = stupid V6 B280
960 = naturally aspirated B6304 (whiteblock inline-6)
940 SE = 960 but with a B230FT redblock instead

Thanks. That helps a ton when I begin the search in the spring. I doubt I'll come across a 240 donor.

B280 is better than the earlier straight-6 modulars.
Why'd they get rid of the B23? Is the 230 cheaper to make, or is it legally advantageous for some reason (such as the funky skinny-tall cylinder British engines).
