Volvo 264GL Mopar 360 swap

I was scrolling thru Facebook market place when I found a 1976 Volvo 264 gl for sale for around 500$ last summer. It didn't have a motor or trans. It looked cool so I bought it. Had to tear it down completely due to mold and rust. The frame is good for the most part. Rear floor boards were gone and the front had like half so I chopped them out and welded/bondoed some sheet metal in. The trunk had to be chopped too. Might keep it open so I can rear mount the radiator if I don't have enough space in the front. It might not cause I tried fitting the engine in today. I gotta persuade it to fit with a hammer and maybe an angle grinder.

I have to weld and bolt in some motor mount towers and framing.
The motor was a 5.9L v8 from my dad's old 1986 dodge ram van. Had the motor bored 40 over and stroked crank. Upgraded the cam by a bit and added some 1.5 rockers. Stock heads, valves and intake manifold. Quadrajet carb. The motor will be 6.7L now and have around 10.5:1 compression. The transmission should be a 727 torqueflite.

As of today its now sort of suspended on the hoist and half laying on some tires. The trans and engine is together. I need a new drive shaft.
The Volvo still has stock suspension and like stock everything. I wont have power steering or ac. The Volvo had a compressor but the pulley was almost rusted gone and the ac system in the car was gross so i pulled everything out.

The car when i bought it. Paint looked ok in the picture but in person there were many scratched that exposed bare metal and rusted. Im gonna repaint it. Also the Windshield broke and i had to order one from this online volvo store it it costed me nearly 1k. They sent the wrong one at first and so i had to wait like 3 months for the right one. Now i got a extra windshield for a 262 coupe i think.

This is most of the pictures ill try and update you guys on the progress. Any feedback, questions or suggestions? Im a college student so my resources are limited but I got the time. Ive seen many that were ford or ls swapped but not a lot of mopars so i decided to give it a go. Yes i know the garage is a mess. Also my first swap and build

It might just be me, but I'm not seeing any pictures.

Nonetheless, interesting build. Excited to see this come together.

I see I was using google photos to share the pics so I didnt realize only I could see them.

I sort of got it to fit with some hammering and chopping. I might need to ditch the oem fan and get an electric one cause i dont think i can fit it.

So after a day of thinking and testing i came up with this design made of wood. The 2 parallel horizontal pieces will be welded and/or bolted to the original cross member. The 2 motor mount towers will be bent inwards by around 75 degrees. Im thinking of either running solid mounts or solid on drivers and poly on passengers or just poly it all around. My rotating assembly was balanced so it should not have that much vibrations. Solids would be much easier since I would just have to weld everything up then bolt the engine down. With poly I would have to do some extra thinking. and fabricating. If i make poly mounts i think im gonna just pour around an inch and a half thick square piece and sandwich that between the towers and mounts. You guys got any suggestions?

I have started welding pieces of metal together to form the cross member. I havent welded it to the car yet so I can still move it around. I am going to add more support to where the new cross member meets the frame. Did my calculations wrong so there isn't that much i can weld to the frame. Around 3 cm where the cross member touches the frame.
I haven't figured out how to mount the engine to the frame yet.

School kinda happened lol
After some thinking(1 whole month). Ive decided to scrap the original mounting idea cause it didnt look too good and had issues with clearance(I totally forgot about the steering rack). This is what I came up with. Took a whole week of matching and fitting and today I finally got started welding the brackets to the frame.
Home depot didnt have 1/2 in grade 5 bolts so im using grade 8 for now but the 2 bolts on the block are grade 5 7/16 in
How do the welds look? Ive almost finished all the welds just need to add a few more support pieces to the brackets. Havent tried setting the motor back in yet.

weldings!!!

Is that flux core? Thats awesome !!!! came out strong .

I'm using a flux core welder and it does what it is supposed to. Sometimes I need something mig welded, so I take it to work and in my spare / break time i weld it, like my 2 into 1 oil pan. It came out about 95 % ok till I tested it with water. I did some repairs with flux core , but it was too hot for it. So I used muffler cement outside and silicone inside. Just finished putting it back yesterday.
The true test will come next week.
Ok keep up the joy of mods!!!!
DZ:oogle:

Yep flux core. 125$ flux core welder from harbor freight. It looks ugly but hopefully it holds. We ll see when I put that motor back in lmao.

Finally got it in today. All bolted up. The bottom of the oil pan kinda touches the steering rack but its ok. Added some 1/4 inch spacers to the subframe. Trans mount is questionable but it holds rn sooo yea. Now I just need a custom driveshaft and to finish all the plumbing then it should be drivable. I think.

Also while welding stuff I melted thru one plastic tubing? Is it the fuel return line? Since i have a carb now I dont need it right?
20201103_192206.jpg

Went and ordered a custom driveshaft today. Costed me 250$. I gave the shop the old driveshaft from the van.

I dont know where to get the coolant hoses. I was going for a rear mounted radiator to balance it out kinda. I might try and use pvc or aluminum or steel tubing.

Still need to put the fuel tank back in and wire up the pump. Since its gonna be running off the mechanical pump and a electrical inline one I need to make/extend the sending unit.

Havent gotten started on the fuel lines either.
Electrical still a mess lmao.

need help with wiring

I need help with wiring. When i got the car everything was out so i dont know what goes where and ive been searching around for diagrams and i cant find much on a 1976 264. got some ideas but just need conformation.
20201116_183332.jpg

1. These are the temp and oil sensors right? Could you guys identify which one goes to what? Also im missing the other end so i dont know if there is relays and other wiring stuff that goes with it.
20201116_183409.jpg

2. This small connector should be the ignition switch. Does it go directly to the starter or is there a relay?
20201116_183438.jpg

3. The one on the left should be the power block right? and does it just mount up to the rail behind it? Could I remove it and just wire it up to the battery? And whats the one on the right? is it for the headlights?
20201116_183505.jpg

4.The small spade could go to the ignition coil? And the other one goes to the alternator right?

Thats all the wiring i have in the engine bay. Other than the lights and horns and fans. Im probably missing like half of it right?

Im alive and I t?s alive. Got back to working on it yesterday after taking a long break. Did the wiring and connected spark and fuel and got it started today. Only ran it for 10 seconds since it doesn?t have cooling yet.

It?s turn key so far. No switches yet and might not need it.
